Liverpool forward and Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, both passed away after being involved in a car crash near Zaragoza, Spain, early Thursday morning.
The Spanish Civil Guard reported that the two crashed in a Lamborghini on an isolated stretch of highway west of Zaragoza. The car was found in flames after one of its tires blew out.
The incident was initially reported by Spanish police and has since been confirmed by Liverpool, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Portuguese Football Federation.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the deaths,” said Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
Liverpool also released a statement saying they are devastated by Jota’s death and will not be commenting on it any further at this time.
This tragic incident comes just 11 days after Jota’s marriage to Rute Cardoso. The 28-year-old had three children with her as well.
Jota began his career with Paços de Ferreira in Portugal but gained notoriety for his play for Wolves, whom he joined initially on loan in 2017 from Atlético Madrid before making the move permanent the following season.
His high level at Wolves led to his £41 million ($55.99m) transfer to Liverpool in 2020. In his five years with the club, he made 182 appearances and helped Liverpool win the Premier League title this past season.
Jota also played 49 times for Portugal and scored 14 goals for his country. He won the UEFA Nations League twice, with the first victory coming in 2019 and the second coming this summer against Spain.
The entire soccer world has been shocked by this tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jota’s family and all those around him.
RIP Diogo Jota. You’ll Never Walk Alone.
