The bearded riverboat gambler isn’t done yet. Despite being 40-years-old, Brent Burns is still kicking and is gearing up to play another NHL Season. Except this time it will be for the Colorado Avalanche.
Burns, the former Wild, Sharks, and Canes D man, will be inking a one year deal with the Avs. The deal is for $1 million. However, there are bonuses added on there that will count against the cap next year if the bonuses take the Avs over the cap this year.
Burns, 6-foot-5, 228, has played 1,497 career regular-season games and has notched 910 points. He was drafted as a forward, but since the switch to D, Burns has been one of the most prolific forces on the blue line for a long time. Maybe he’s not 2016-17 James Norris Memorial Trophy 76 points good anymore, but this dude can very much still play.
Sure, he’s not an ace defensively, and he’s going to get burned being the riverboat gambler he is. The guy still packs a punch on offense, and he’s someone who helps carry the puck out of the zone for the better.
It’s a great get for the Avs who were incredibly thin on that side of things a year ago. Especially on the third pair, where Burns will likely play at this stage of his career. This is a really nice veteran to have behind guys like Cale Makar and Devon Toews. For this price tag, it’s a gamble absolutely worth taking for Colorado.
