Chickster may have said the Spurs aren’t ready to compete (link to blogger draft), but new incoming rookie Dylan Harper doesn’t agree.
The Spurs picked Dylan Harper with the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and the former Rutgers product proclaims San Antonio is making the playoffs right away.
“That’s going to change really quick,” Harper told reporters. “We’re going to make the playoffs. I think for the Spurs fans and everyone else, our group is very exciting. There’s a lot to look forward to. The sky’s the limit for this group we’ve got.”
“I’m working out, and I randomly see Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich and Manu Ginobili,” Harper said. “That’s not something you’ll see in any other organization. Growing up, this is one of the teams you always wanted to play for.
“Seeing their dynasty, [you] just keep wanting to build on those banners and want to add a few more.”
Harper, 19, will join a Spurs team that also rosters point guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle. That has a chance to be an insane collection of guards. That’s not including sharpshooter Devin Vassell either. Add in another year of Victor Wembanyama? Yes, the West is an absolute dog fight with no real weak teams in the conference, but San Antonio should be in the mix for a playoff spot, especially if Harper is the real deal right away as a rookie.
As for Chickster, he will complain either way, even if they’re good too soon. Take that to the bank.
