Caris LeVert signs two-year deal with Pistons

Free agent guard Caris LeVert has signed a two-year, $29 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Monday.

Pistons guard Malik Beasley, who finished second in the NBA in made 3-pointers last season, is being federally investigated for illegal gambling activities during the 2023-24 season when he was with the Milwaukee Bucks. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the two sides were discussing a three-year, $42 million deal that would’ve kept Beasley in Detroit long-term.

Now that those conversations are paused, the Pistons had some cap space to wield around (pending they renounce their FAs). LeVert was their first pivot, reuniting with general manager Trajan Langdon, who played a part of drafting him when Langdon was in the Brooklyn Nets front office.

LeVert, 30, averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 46.7 percent shooting and 37.3 percent from 3-point range. He’s nowhere near the shooter nor floor spacer that Beasley is, but he can be a secondary creator alongside Cade Cunningham, helping take some of the burden off his shoulders.

The Pistons still have work to do. They can’t replace Tim Hardaway Jr. and Beasley with LeVert if that’s the plan. Detroit’s worked so hard to get better spacing around their one-time All-Star; the last thing it can do is revert back to clogged spacing.
