Free agent guard Dennis Schroder has signed a three-year deal for the Sacramento Kings, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Tuesday. The deal will be worth $45 million.
Dennis Schroder averaged 10.8 points, and 5.3 assists for the Detroit Pistons last season. Sacramento wanted to add another ball handler and now they landed their veteran guard. Schroder has been in the league for 12 years with the Kings being his 10th team. It does not matter what system he is in as he is a walking double-digit ppg scorer with about five assists for eleven years now.
The Schroder acquisition is not a home run that makes the Kings dangerous in the playoffs. However, it gives them another playmaker to run the offense. Also, with Schroder’s scoring upside it’ll hopefully mean the Kings’ second unit offense will not be as stagnant as last season. He could slot in as a starter depending on what the Kings do with Malik Monk.
This is the first free agent signing of new general manager Scott Perry’s tenure with the Kings. He had a nice draft by trading into the first round to select forward Nique Clifford and selecting center Maxine Raynaud in the second round. Perry is trying to build a better culture in Sacramento and get them back to the playoffs. However, while Dennis Schroder is a fine signing there is plenty of roster work in Sacramento.
