D’Angelo Russell Signs With The Dallas Mavericks

D’Angelo Russell has signed a two-year $13 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks. This was first reported by Shams Charania on Twitter/X:

D’Angelo Russell now joins the Mavericks that just recently draft Cooper Flagg. Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in March of 2025 and shouldn’t be expected back until at least January of 2026. However, there is still good talent on this team that D’Angelo Russell can contribute to. Anthony Davis (if he can stay healthy), aging Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Derrick Lively, and Daniel Gafford are all pieces that can help the Mavericks stay the course until Kyrie comes back. D’Angelo Russell is expected to have a huge role as the primary PG. With not much of a ball-handler behind him, a lot of the Mavericks success in guard play will depend on Russell. When Kyrie comes back, you can expect Russell to help the 2nd unit out a ton and help lead that unit.

This Mavericks team has really taken the “Defense wins championships” mantra to heart with this team. AD, Klay, PJ, Lively, and Gafford along with Cooper Flagg now, are all known one way or another, for their defense. However, there’s is not a lot of offense to be excited about on this team, especially on the perimeter. Russell will excel at that and Klay can still shoot that thang, however, there’s just not a lot of perimeter scoring that is going to free up the spacing that the Mavericks need to succeed on offense. It’s almost like Luke Doncic might have been good for that…or something. Let’s see how D’Angelo Russell does in Dallas.
