Matias Maccelli Traded To Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are turning the gears in reshaping the forward group, acquiring Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for a conditional third-round pick. With Mitch Marner likely on his way out, Toronto is clearly focused on building out its depth and skill across the lineup. Maccelli brings playmaking ability and a high hockey IQ, giving the Leafs a versatile middle-six option as they retool around their core. It’s a low-risk move with potential upside for a team looking to stay in the mix. Elliotte Friedman confirmed it is Brad Treliving who made the move:

It’s hard to say this is a bad move for the Leafs. Maccelli is only 24 and a year removed from a 57-point season on a bad Utah/Arizona team. He is a secondary playmaker who could slot in the middle six and powerplay. Utah simply has too many decent wingers, especially after adding JJ Peterka from Buffalo. There was little room for him this season, and his ice time suffered as a result. He is a liability physically at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, but he still brings something to the table on the puck. Toronto is getting a good player who can add some skill and O zone support:

Elephant In The Room

Everything Treliving does from here on out is from a clear ripple effect. Mitch Marner does not want to be a Maple Leaf, and it’s only a matter of time before he heads to Vegas. After hounding Islanders fans for hating John Tavares, Leafs fans did the same thing to a hometown kid. Every time they crashed out of the playoffs blame almost immediately shifted to Marner. Yes, his style of play doesn’t usually rise in the playoffs. He’s an elite playmaker rather than a play driver or finisher. However, 90-point forwards don’t exactly grow on trees. Right handed ones, especially. Assuming he plays with Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev, that could be one of the best lines in hockey next season. Maccelli is a nice player, but Toronto will need a lot more to fill the hole Marner leaves behind. It goes without saying that they will be very active this Summer

This move is just the beginning for Toronto. With plenty of cap space probably in play, the Leafs are far from done. Brad Marchand has been floated as a possible target, and more reinforcements for the bottom six are almost certainly on the way. Toronto’s forward group is getting a makeover —and the front office will try to swing with purpose.
