If you thought that Bill Belichick was going to celebrate his 5th Super Bowl championship for an extended period of time you were highly mistaken. Bill Belichick is not only the head coach of the Patriots but he is the general manager as well and knows he needs to start doing his homework in preparation for the 2017 NFL Draft.
“As of today, and as great as today feels and as great as today is, in all honesty we’re five weeks behind in the 2017 season to most teams in the league. Fortunately we have a great personnel staff,” Belichick said at a news conference Monday morning. “… Look, in a couple weeks we’re going to be looking at the combine, obviously the draft, all-star games have already occurred, and in a month we’re into free agency, not to mention all the internal Patriots players (whose) contracts are up and we’re going to have to work with in some form or fashion like every team in the league does.”
Belichick is right, winning the Super Bowl does cost you valuable time in scouting players. He has already missed the Senior Bowl which is where he found Trey Flowers a couple of years ago. Flowers had 2.5 sacks in the Super Bowl. Belichick is always looking to upgrade his team and knows his time is limited in perparing for the draft.
“I’d say if you don’t do a good job with your football team in February, March and April you’re probably going to see that in November, December and January,” Belichick said.
Championships are won in the offseason. Building a championship roster is tougher than it looks and requires a ton of preparation.
