Less than 24 hours after trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Boston Celtics have shipped big man Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team trade including the Brooklyn Nets, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Tuesday.
The full package, according to Charania, is that Boston is trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks, the Hawks are sending Georges Niang and a second-round pick to Boston and Terance Mann plus the No. 22 overall pick in Wednesday night’s draft is being sent to Brooklyn (via Atlanta).
The Celtics saved roughly $5 million in cap by trading Holiday Monday night, and saved an additional $22.5 million by trading Porzingis for Niang. According to capologist Yossi Gozlan, the Celtics have reduced their luxury tax penalty by a whopping $210 million with these two trades, which is a significant amount.
Even under new ownership, the breadcrumbs were always there for the Boston Celtics to try their best to get under the second apron. Well, mission accomplished.
Porzingis has a lower-body injury history and is entering the final year of his $30.7 million contract. The entire world knew he was going to be salary dumped at some point–especially after the Holiday trade on Monday–but for what was unknown. A second-round pick and Georges Niang isn’t a lot, but the Celtics built a $22 million trade exception as a result.
When healthy, the Hawks do have an intriguing starting five with Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher and Porzingis, who’s played roughly 60 percent of his available games in each of the last two seasons.
Also, how did Brooklyn end up with a first-round pick? They have five–including four outside of the top-18–in Wednesday’s draft. No way they use all of those … right?!?
