Making our way through these profiles as we get to another middle infielder in Shortstop Aiva Arquette. The 21-year-old was drafted in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft but instead decided to attend the University of Washington, ultimately ending up at Oregon State. A good decision it was, as Arquette will now hear his name called early in the first round.
The first thing that jumps out to me with Aiva Arquette is the size. At 6’5 220 lbs, he already looks like an MLB player. Arquette uses that frame to his advantage, easily being able to generate power at the college level with his quick swing.
He gets his hands through the zone very quickly at that size, which has allowed him to barrel up a lot of baseball. He can get a little pull-happy at times, but at that size, can you blame him?
Other than that, there aren’t too many glaring holes in his game. He seems to have a good approach and does a good job of not chasing or striking out too much. Two things I feel could hinder his development if it becomes a problem at any point.
The raw power is clearly there for Aiva Arquette; the question is whether he can tap into it at the highest level. He projects to be a guy who can hit 20-25 home runs while hitting a lot of doubles. Which would be more than enough production if he sticks at short.
Scouts worry that his lack of speed could hinder his ability to hold down shortstop in the MLB. But with that frame alone, he will be able to make up for that lack of speed. He also has a rocket arm, which is better suited for short.
There is a lot of shortstop talent in this draft class. But Arquette has the chance to be the one who stands out the most. We live in a power-dominant game, and if this power can translate like I think it will, Aiva Arquette will be making a team very happy very soon.
Overall, there is a lot to like about Aiva Arquette. You’re looking at a shortstop who has the potential to be a 30 HR guy. Something that seems to be becoming increasingly rare these days, despite the surge in power numbers.
A smooth right-handed swing with some natural pop at short gives me some Carlos Correa vibes. But even Correra was only 6’3 and had a better glove than Arquette will likely ever have. Still, that kind of offensive production at short isn’t seen very often these days, and teams will be chomping at the bit to get Aiva Arqurtte on their team.
