Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 60
Keeping up with these MLB Draft Profiles as we make our way to another left-handed pitcher, Jamie Anrold. The 21-year-old has had a very strong 2024/2025 season, shooting up draft boards. He finished third in strikeouts and was a Golden Spikes Award finalist. While posting an absurd K/BB rate. Add all that to the fact that he’s a lefty, and you have a potential recipe for success.
The thing you first notice when looking at Jamie Arnold is the consistent improvement year after year. When he came out of Jesuit High School, his fastball sat at 88-92 with a lower arm slot. Now the fastball sits 94-95, hitting 97 at times.
Now, fastball velocity isn’t everything, but Arnold has already shown an ability to adapt his game and make necessary changes—something he will likely need to do if he wants to make it to the show.
Speaking of that fastball, it’s a very good pitch. Grading at a 60, it’s got the typical left-handed kind of movement that helps it miss a lot of bats. Especially when located higher in the zone.
His Slider/Sweeper gets a little wide at times, and he can sometimes lose command of the pitch, causing him to get behind in counts. But when the pitch is on, it’s a great out pitch for Arnold, garnering a 41% whiff rate.
He technically has a changeup as a third pitch and has shown a good feel for it. But it’s a pitch he is going to need to work on a bit more, especially if he wants to effectively get out right-handed MLB hitters.
With the funky arm slot and ability to pound the strike zone. It’s no surprise Jamie Arnold has seen such a sharp rise. Watching him pitch gives me some Chris Sale vibes, especially when he has that slider working like it should.
Staying on topic of the funky arm motion. When you watch him throw, it looks easy on his arm. Yes, the video is two years old, and Arnold is throwing harder. However, even recent films show a throwing motion that looks very repeatable.
Allowing Arnold to throw effectively deep into games. Something that has become a lost art for the modern starting pitcher. He doesn’t see significant dips in velocity or movement, indicating an ability to pace himself effectively.
I’m not sure if Jamie Arnold will ever be the ace of a rotation, maybe if he can master that changeup, plus one more pitch. Worst case, though, I see Arnold being a great mid-rotation guy that can eat innings while pounding the strike zone.
