The Arizona Diamondbacks forked over big bucks to sign Corbin Burnes this offseason. They’re not exactly going to get bang for their buck after this news. The veteran right-handed starter was off to a good start, but got hit with the injury bug.
Burnes will miss the entire season and maybe even all of the 2026 MLB Season after getting set to undergo Tommy John surgery.
Radio broadcaster Chris Garagiola was the first to mention the news:
Burnes, 30, sports a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season. He’s also not the only Arizona pitcher on the shelf. Jordan Montgomery is on the IL with the same surgery. The rotation without those guys will feature Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson, and Eduardo Rodriguez. Given where the D-Backs are in the standings, it’s certainly possible that this team goes into sell mode given the news they got here with Burnes. They probably weren’t catching the Dodgers or Padres even with a healthy Burnes. Without him… good luck navigating the top of the division here in the NL West.
Also, not to be this guy, but I kinda called it. Burnes felt like a risky investment during the offseason, and now that’s coming to fruition. Hopefully, he comes back strong after the surgery, but it’s not guaranteed he ever reaches his top end form again. By the way, Burnes has an opt out in his contract. Does anybody want to bet that puppy doesn’t get exercised now?
