What Can The Padres Realistically Offer For Jarren Duran?

The San Diego Padres are hot and bothered for Jarren Duran. We know how AJ Prellar operates. He’s going to push his chips in the middle of the table and be aggressive far more than most. Is there a way for Prellar to actually land Duran via trade? Let’s have a chat about all the angles you need to know.

Duran, 28, was an 8.7 WAR player last year. This year he’s not off to as hot of a start, but he’s still doing Duran things out there slashing .273/.318/.424 with 13 steals and a 107 OPS+. Also, the Red Sox have three more years of cost-controlled certainty even after this year.

Let’s be real about one thing. Duran is one of the only things the Sox have going for them. It’s Duran and Devers at the top of the lineup. Most of the time, you can include Wilyer Abreu in that discussion. Beyond that, it’s a lot of nothing. The Sox need Duran and really have no reason to move him unless they’re totally blown away.

Reports have already surfaced that trade talks aren’t likely to go anywhere for all the reasons I mentioned already.

Now here’s where the Padres factor in…

Because they have virtually nothing to offer. They have two really nice prospects in their farm system that they paid a lot of money for on the International market in the form of Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas. Both of whom are both teenagers and aren’t close to helping the actual big league team out. If a deal gets reached, one or both have to be included, along with help from the MLB team. Otherwise, there’s no reason for Boston to even consider doing a deal with 3.5 years of control left with Duran. The rest of the Padres system is pretty putrid after years of going for it.

I say all that to say this. If you’re a Padres fan thinking you’re getting Duran, don’t get your hopes up. Craig Breslow might be foolish, but he’s not totally stupid either.
