Someone needs to tell Sean Payton to put his chubby away when he talks about Pat Bryant because it’s totally out of control. Can we just take a moment to have a quick chat about all of this?
The hype machine needs to stop. The guy hasn’t taken a snap yet, and we’re already throwing out Michael Thomas comps, which is just an insane expectation level for any rookie third round pick to have. I’ll add that I didn’t have Bryant ranked in my rankings, and the idea that he went in the third round is probably silly in its own right.
We do get that there was a stretch of time where Thomas was legitimately viewed as the best receiver in football, right? We’re talking about a guy who posted over 1,400 yards in 2018 and over 1,700 yards in 2019. To put that guy in the same sentence as Pat Bryant is borderline disrespectful.
I’m really not trying to dump on Bryant, but WTF are we doing here? Bryant had 984 yards as a senior last year for Illinois. He was in the 400 and 500 range the two years prior. We’re talking about a guy who needed a breakout final campaign as a senior to even get drafted. Now we think that same guy might turn into the next legendary receiver.
Can we just pump the brakes? Courtland Sutton is still the WR1. Marvin Mims isn’t going anywhere as the speed threat. Let’s worry about whether Bryant can beat out guys like Devaughn Vele and Troy Franklin before we start throwing out idiotic comps. Can we just agree on that?
