As each day passes, the Boston Red Sox’s chances at securing their first division title since 2018 continue slipping away.
They enter Sunday at 27-29, 2.5 games back of the third-and-final wild card spot and 7.5 games back of the New York Yankees in the AL East. The lead isn’t insurmountable; it’s May 27. We’re barely one-third of the way through the season. But the Red Sox are losers of nine of their last 14, will be without Alex Bregman indefinitely with a quad injury and have the most one-run losses in MLB after their 3-2 loss Monday to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder voiced his frustration after their Memorial Day loss.
“I’m tired of losing,” he told reporters. “I’m tired of losing close games. We just need to figure it out. … We suck right now.”
Refsnyder isn’t off base, either.
Minus Bregman, the Red Sox only have four above-average hitters in their lineup right now: Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, Wilyer Abreu and Carlos Narvaez. Kristian Campbell hit a wall after a strong first couple of weeks; Trevor Story has been colder than the North Pole; while he’s been phenomenal defensively, Ceddanne Rafaela swings at practically every pitch; David Hamilton and Nick Sogard have been awful stop-gaps.
Garrett Crochet has been phenomenal, and showed up once again despite Monday’s one-run loss, striking out 11 batters in 6.2 innings of two-run ball. But starters not-named Crochet have a 4.96 ERA (4.44 FIP), which would rank No. 27 and 23 across MLB rotations, respectively.
It has not been smooth sailing nor has it been for going on four seasons. Marcelo Mayer is now up in the big leagues and had a strong weekend, but the Red Sox will need more help (hello, Roman Anthony) everywhere to hopefully bridge their gap over the next several weeks.
