It turns out Sam Darnold wasn’t blindsided by the Jalen Milroe pick, unlike what happened with Kirk Cousins and the whole Michael Penix thing in Atlanta last year. Seattle appears to be thriving in the communication department. Darnold is clearly the guy for this year with Milroe being the long term developmental piece.
Here’s what general manager John Schneider had to say about how all of this went down.
“Yeah, coach Mike Macdonald gave Sam a heads up,” Seahawks G.M. John Schneider said in a recent interview with Rich Eisen. “It was kind of in that period just coming down the pike, like, ‘Hey, this isn’t about you. This is about acquiring an impact player, in our opinion. Where’s the quarterback stuff go? We don’t know how fast.’
“So, Mike talked to Sam. I was able to communicate with Drew. And, obviously, we were communicating with Sam Howell all throughout the weekend as well. Sam Howell’s a special person, too.”
I would imagine that Darnold is pretty locked in as the starter here. This seems like Seattle is really going to take their time with Milroe. Sure, maybe he’s a few rushing red zone packages as a rookie, but not a ton beyond that. Based on how Darnold plays this year, that conversation gets revisited in 2026. I’m not sure how complex this thing really is beyond that. Frankly, I’m not really surprised the Seahawks pulled the trigger on Milroe, considering Mike Macdonald was in Baltimore with Lamar Jackson.
