I noticed Matt Hanifan didn’t list the Celtics in his Giannis Antetokounmpo potential landing spots post. Maybe this is the Homer in me talking, but are we positive Boston isn’t in the mix here?
We know how this works. Politics always wins out here. Had the Celtics found a way to repeat this year, this conversation would never have come up. However, the C’s are on the verge of elimination, Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles, and their tax bill is already enormous. Something has to give, and Giannis could maybe be the kicker in all of this… if Brad Stevens is actually smart (which I seem to be the only one not convinced he is).
Giannis seems to be more open-minded than ever about leaving Milwaukee. At the end of the day, this is going to be a recruiting battle won on the streets. This is absolutely going to be a situation where Milwaukee does right by the player. If he wants to stay, that’s what will happen. If he wants to play for Team X, that will happen, as long as the assets line up in a reasonable way to where they got more than the Mavericks did for Luka Doncic.
Are we positive the Celtics won’t offer some sort of package that includes Jayson Tatum AND OR Jaylen Brown along with Kristaps Porzingis to land Giannis? By the way, Boston has most of their picks. This isn’t a Clippers situation where they pissed all of them away in trades. All of these guys are mostly homegrown, and landing a superstar like Tatum or Brown came via the draft.
Not that Jrue Holiday is pushing for this, but those two do have a good history of playing together. What if you went with a starting five of Derrick White, Jrue, Brown, Giannis, and Al Horford? The math would be complicated, but if you found a way to include a third team that takes Porzingis on, that would drastically reduce the tax bill when you keep in mind the max slots of Tatum and or Brown cost nearly the same as Giannis. Also, Milwaukee just might have a guy like Tatum to center their next run. Can they really do better to start a trade with? Especially when you consider the injury would actually would give them a year to tank.
I’m not saying it’s for sure guaranteed to happen, but miracles happen in this league all the time. Just look at what happened with the Draft lottery…
