The Colorado Rockies, on pace for less than 30 wins, reached a new low on Saturday night with a 21-0 loss to the San Diego Padres.
Less than 24 hours after that humiliating defeat, the organization has fired manager Bud Black–in addition to bench coach Mike Redmond–they announced Sunday afternoon.
Third base coach Warren Schaeffer will be the interim manager while Clint Hurdle will be the interim bench coach.
The Rockies entered Sunday at 6-33, their worst 39-game start in franchise history and the worst in MLB since the Baltimore Orioles started similarly in 1988. The Orioles finished 54-107 that year.
After Colorado’s 9-3 win over the San Diego Padres Sunday, they are on track to win 28 games, the worst record in the modern era–13 games worst than the Chicago White Sox (41-121) had in 2024.
Black, 67, went 544-690 in nine seasons with Colorado (2017-25), though it hasn’t eclipsed 74 wins since 2018, when it went 91-72. Since then, the Rockies have finished with 71, 74, 68, 59 and 61 wins in 162-game seasons, respectively.
Over his managerial career, Black went 1,193-1,403 (.460), also managing the San Diego Padres for nine seasons (2007-2015).
While Black isn’t a good manager, no new voice is going to fix this sinking ship. Colorado stinks and Dick Monfort is one of the worst owners in not only MLB, but in North American sports. That’s the reality, so I don’t think there will be any tangible change until he sells it.
