Eight years on the job, zero career playoff series wins. Yeah… that will do it. Except that doesn’t even tell the full story. Rob Blake somehow had a contract extension on the table, and the two sides agreed to move on anyway.
The Kings have put out a statement that revealed the news that Blake and the club have parted ways.
Team President Luc Robitaille had the following to say on the parting of ways with Blake.
“On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Rob for his dedication to the LA Kings and the passion he brought to his role,” said Robitaille. “Reaching this understanding wasn’t easy and I appreciate Rob’s partnership in always working toward what is best for the Kings. Rob deserves a great deal of credit and respect for elevating us to where we are today. He has been an important part of the Kings and will always be appreciated for what he has meant to this franchise.”
The Kings went 309-238-71 during the eight years Blake was in charge. That includes five playoff appearances but zero trips to the second round. At some point, given all of that, a change needed to be made. We’ll see who the Kings end up hiring for that job, but I’m also not sure it will matter. I’d also argue the number one change that needs to be made is firing head coach Jim Hiller after he made the dumbest challenge call I’ve ever seen, but that’s a topic for another day.
