Can Tommy Mellott become the next Julian Edelman? The Raiders certainly hope so. I wasn’t planning on doing a 2025 NFL Draft profile for the Montana State signal caller, but we’ll go ahead and do so after he was actually picked. With that said, we’ll get right down to business next!
Mellott, 24, was a two star duel threat quarterback recruit during the 2020 cycle. That includes being the 96th overall duel threat QB and second overall player in the state of Montana. Checking in at 5-foot-11, 200, he spent all his collegiate seasons at Montana State.
This is the thing. We can do this whole song and dance breaking down his QB tape. It’s pretty much a waste of time given that fact that he’s going to play wide receiver at the next level. This past year, Mellott finally took steps forward as a passer posting a 31-2 TD to INT ratio. The smashed his prior career high of ten passing touchdowns.
In reality, it’s Mellott’s threat as a runner is what got him drafted. Last year he rushed for 1,050 yards at an 8.5 YPC clip. He was also over 1,000 yards as a sophomore as well. He’s not overly big, which is probably why he’s switching positions.
No notes in terms of the Combine or any collegiate All-Star events. Mellott was never invited to those events. I don’t even want to go too far down this rabbit hole because it’s all eye test in terms of guessing just how fast he is. He definitely didn’t look slow though, so he has that going for him.
Let’s be real about this one. It’s a throw of the dice. You’re hoping he can stick as a slot receiver with plus speed. Maybe it works out. Maybe it doesn’t. Either way, you’re not using any fantasy resources here until there’s real evidence this can work two-three years down the road.
