Malik Beasley wants to remain with Pistons

The Detroit Pistons were one of the scrappiest teams in the NBA this season. Their 30-win improvement was also one of the most drastic season-to-season turnarounds in league history. But their season came to an unfortunate end Thursday night at the hands of the New York Knicks, losing 116-113 in Game 6.

However, the future is bright in Motown, spearheaded by first-time All-Star Cade Cunningham and big man Jalen Duren. However, one of the key pieces to this team’s success was sixth-man Malik Beasley, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Beasley, 28, made it known after Thursday’s season-ending loss that he wants to remain in Detroit.

“In my whole 9 years in the NBA, I never had as much fun coming to the gym,” Beasley said. “I’ve been through a lot of stuff just this year alone. Every day coming in was probably the best thing that happened to me. [Head coach JB Bickerstaff] and [General manager Trajan Langdon] did an amazing job of making sure when you come in here, it’s fun, it’s energetic, it’s a place where you want to be. It’s definitely a place I want to be.

“To be here–it’s my mom’s hometown. I grew up here a lot in the summertime. To be able to perform in front of the city, it’s huge and I’m glad I got a chance to do that.”

The ninth-year guard had arguably his best season as a pro in 2024-25. After signing a one-year, $6 million deal last offseason, Beasley averaged 16.3 points on 43.0 percent shooting, including a career-best 41.6 percent from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-4 sharpshooter finished second in the NBA in made 3-pointers this season, canning 319 of them–one behind Minnesota star Anthony Edwards. Detroit desperately needed more floor spacing heading into 2024-25, and Beasley quickly turned into a fan favorite because of that very skill.

He will be entering his age-29 season and I’d imagine he’s looking for a multi-year deal. Detroit won’t have his bird rights, but it will have plenty of cap space to sign myriad free agents. Once that space is used up, I’m curious to see if he would be willing to sign the mid-level exception, which will start around $14.1 million this offseason.

Would you bring Beasley back if you were Trajan Langdon? Let us know in the comments!
