Logan Couture Forced To Medically Retire

It’s the end of the road for Logan Couture. The Sharks’ captain didn’t play a game this year and has been since forced to medically retire. It’s probably not the way Couture wanted to go out, but he’s forever a legend in San Jose. He technically has two years remaining on his contract after this season at $8 million per season, but will now be placed on LTIR.

Couture, 36, had a lengthy press conference with Sharks management to fully announce the news:

“I’m not physically able to play anymore,” Couture said. “It’s tough. [It stinks], but it is what it is. I loved and cherished every single moment that I got to play in this league. The NHL is everything that I thought it would be when I was a kid.”

“I was obsessed with the game and with sports,” Couture said. “I’m so proud of what I was able to accomplish as a player and what we were able to accomplish here in San Jose. We had some incredible teams. I had so much fun playing here. I really did. I’m going to take so many memories of my career.”

Couture was selected with the No. 9 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft. San Jose sure got their money’s worth on that pick. He’s fifth in Sharks history in games played (933), third in goals (323), fifth in assists (378), and fourth in points (701). Oh, and that’s not including the 116 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs scoring 48 goals in that stretch.

Cheers to a hell of a career.
