Alec Martinez Retires From The NHL

Alec Martinez is finally hanging up the skates and calling it a career. The three time Stanley Cup winning defenseman has played his final game at the NHL level.

Chicago’s last game against Winnipeg, it was revealed Martinez will retire from the NHL.

“You’re going to make me tear up. I’ve got to get ready for a game but obviously a lot of different emotions today,” Martinez told Blackhawks color analyst Darren Pang prior to the game.

“Just very thankful, very appreciative. I have a lot of people, my family, a lot of people who helped me along the way in this game to get here. Once I got here, my wife (Emily), my son, my daughter that I’m going to have in about five days. Just I suppose I’ll have more time to reflect in the coming weeks, but just very thankful, very appreciative of a lot of different things and a lot of different people.”

I would argue that this should have happened after the Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup, but Martinez did cash in on an extra $10+ million by playing two more seasons, so I can’t say I blame him. Martinez was replaced once Vegas traded for Noah Hanifin, and he later signed with Chicago in the offseason. He also won two cups during his heyday with the LA Kings before finishing up with the Blackhawks.

I Tried To Defend Alec Martinez

Martinez, 37, played 862 games in his NHL career, scored 88 goals, 101 assists for 289 total points.
