We have some stud cornerbacks in this class and Will Johnson is very much part of that conversation. Even though Johnson and others on the Michigan team suffered from the martini of success, being hungover from losing Jim Harbaugh, it’s pretty clear Johnson has mega talent. It’s just a matter of trying to diagnose exactly what we’re getting, which is obviously what we’re here to do with this 2025 NFL Draft profile, so let me get right to it.
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 2, Week 4
Johnson, 22, was a four star prospect coming out of high school. The Grosse Pointe, Michigan, native was a borderline five star guy who was ranked as the 35th overall player and 4th overall cornerback prospect in the 2022 cycle. Travis Hunter and Daylen Everette being the two notable names ranked ahead of him.
The Michigan product measured in at 6-foot-2, 194, with just a tick over 30 inch arms. No Combine performance for Johnson as it appears he’s still dealing with some turf toe issue. I’m not a doctor so I’m not going to comment further on that, and we’ll keep it moving. I will say turf toe sucks more than you think it does from someone who had it once.
The list of accolades speaks for themselves here. That list includes 2022 Freshman All-American, 2023 First-team All-Big Ten Conference / National Championship Defensive MVP, 2024 Third-team Associated Press All-American. The stock notes are there for you at the top, but I also encourage you to search for the ones from the previous year because that’s probably a more accurate representation of who he is.
One trait about Johnson stands out above the rest. I don’t really know how he does it because the pure top end speed is not really there. The guy has instincts, and you can’t teach them the way Johnson has it. Over and over again, this guy just beat elite wide receivers to the spot. Coaching has nothing to do with beating Marvin Harrison Jr. to a spot. Harrison still got his, but Johnson clowned with Michael Penix on another level in the National Title game. Let’s also bring up the fact that Mike Sainristil is a bonafide hit, and Johnson was considered the best corner on the team, with it not being debatable.
Not an elite, powerful tackler and not a burner. There are your red flags. I don’t even want to get nit picky here otherwise because it’s obvious this is a really good player. What you saw in 2023 when he forced an opposing passer rating of 30.9 and notched four picks, there really wasn’t much to even see heading into this year. If you need something to watch this year, just go click the USC game at the top, and that will give you everything else you need to see.
Will Johnson is a round one corner. I’m not telling you this guy is the next Derek Stingley but at worst, I think you feel pretty good about getting a red chip corner who will be a productive player you can count on for a long time.
