Pete Carroll: Raiders ‘working on’ signing Geno Smith to extension

Immediately after the Seattle Seahawks traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that he was “expected to get a new deal” with his new team.

At the time, Russini mentioned Smith–entering the last year of his current deal–been looking to make as much as $45 million per year. However, nearly a month removed, there hasn’t been any pen to paper.

There’s obviously still plenty of time left in the offseason. Heck, the 2025 NFL Draft is three weeks away (check out ALL of our amazing draft coverage from Trey). According to head coach Pete Carroll, the two sides continue to work on getting a deal done.

“We’re working on it,” Carroll said earlier this week, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “G’s excited to get going, get started. He’ll be here when we get rolling. But we are working on it.

“His conviction to believe in himself is why he is who he is. That’s why he’s stood through all of these challenges. He’s made it through it, and he’s ready to be on top of the world. He can do anything in this game.”

According to Spotrac, Smith, 34, carries a cap hit of $31 million with a $14 million base salary in 2025. Should he sign a contract with an average annual value of $45 million, that would be tied with Kirk Cousins and Patrick Mahomes for the 13th-highest AAV for quarterbacks; for what it’s worth, it would be $1 million less than Deshaun Watson, $1.1M less than Kyler Murray and $6 million less than reigning Super Bowl champ Jalen Hurts.

That’s still a lot of money for a mediocre quarterback who isn’t going to put you over the top–especially when you’re in the Raiders position. While they needed an upgrade, they weren’t just one big quarterback away–and allocating that much to a mid-tier option provides more doom than gloom at the end of the day.
