The mass exodus in San Francisco continues. Jordan Mason is the next to leave the 49ers after the team traded him to the Minnesota Vikings. A 2026 6th round pick and a late round pick swap will head the other way.
As part of the deal, Mason will also sign a two year extension with Minnesota. The new contract is worth $7 million fully guaranteed and a maximum value of $12 million.
Mason, 25, had a breakout season with the 49ers last year. Considering the 49ers put a second round restricted tender on him, I’m surprised they traded him for this low of a price. That tender was worth $5.3 million in 2025. Not to mention the shaky health status of Christian McCaffrey. Plus, Elijah Mitchell also departed for Kansas City.
The former Georgia Tech product notched 789 rushing yards on 153 attempts with three touchdowns in six starts a season ago. He missed the final five games of the season with an ankle sprain. Now in Minnesota, he’s expected to be the backup to Aaron Jones who re-signed this offseason. Cam Akers played that role last year and is currently a free agent. I would guess that maybe he’s not going to be back now with this news.
Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. are the backups behind McCaffrey in San Francisco right now. Who knows, given how stupid Kyle Shanahan is with the NFL Draft, I’m quite sure they will pick up another running back in the third round who sucks.
