Talanoa Hufanga agrees to three-year deal with Broncos

The safety market continues to heat up! Free agent safety Talanoa Hufanga, a former All-Pro with the San Francisco 49ers, is heading to the Denver Broncos on a three-year, $45 million deal, ESPN NFL insider first reported Monday.

Hufanga has missed ample time due to injury. Last year, he got hurt in Week 5 with a broken wrist that sidelined him for seven games. In 2023, he tore his ACL, which limited him to just 10 games.

His last fully healthy season came in 2022, when he developed into one fo the best safeties in the NFL. He tallied 97 tackles with five tackles-for-loss, three quarterback hits, two sacks, nine pass deflections and four interceptions–making his first and only All-Pro team as a former fifth-rounder. He had three interceptions and 52 tackles in 2023 as well.

Obviously, signing a player coming off multiple injuries–including a knee injury–for $15 million per year carries inherent risk. But it’s a risk worth taking with Hufanga’s raw talent. When he’s healthy and on the field, he’s impactful–and the Broncos defense is a loaded unit spearheaded by reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Pat Surtain.

The 49ers, on the other hand, is in the midst of a mass exodus. They have lost Dre Greenlaw, Deebo Samuel (trade), Charvarius Ward and Javon Hargrave, among others. Their comp pick surplus for 2026 will be nice, but that’s about the only nice thing for a team aiming to pay Brock Purdy a lot of money.
