Trade Grades: Raiders Trade For Geno Smith

Geno Smith is the new starting quarterback of the Raiders after Las Vegas struck a deal with Seattle. I have some thoughts and intro paragraphs are a waste of time so let’s just get right down to business if you don’t mind.

Raiders: Grade F

I think it’s fair to question Tom Brady’s intelligence after this move. Outside of Pete Carroll previously coaching Geno, this move doesn’t make a lick of sense. How can the greatest quarterback of all time cook up Geno Smith as the answer for this team? Is Brady really this stupid?

Geno, 35 in October, really started to show signs of decline last year. Now he’s going to be another year older and is surrounded by a worse team. Even with Geno, this is still a last place team that’s in total rebuild mode. To give up a third round pick while still not solving the problem at quarterback should be considered a sin.

Is this even an upgrade over Gardner Minshew? Do we get that Geno had a 21-15 TD to INT ratio while throwing the ball to DK Metcalf, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Lockett? His weapons are worse. His offensive line is worse. Everything about this situation is worse.

This trade is a sin in every sense of the transaction. You’re in rebuild mode dude. Everything the Raiders do should be about collecting young talent. That third round pick would have been way better served using it on a flier at quarterback in the draft rather than an old player who won’t win a single playoff game for this team. This trade is as stupid as it gets.

Seahawks: Grade A-

The only reason I’m not making this an A+ yet is because we don’t know who Seattle will get at quarterback. All signs point to Sam Darnold and if that’s the case, then this is an A+. Everything else about it is a home run.

Geno wanted a new contract. Seattle no longer has to worry about overpaying on that. The third round pick is a high one given where the Raiders were picking in the draft. For a team that was stuck in the middle, they now have a chance to really turn things around. You can’t rule out using one of those picks on a quarterback of the future too.

The truth of the matter is, this team was doing nothing except wasting time with Geno Smith. They now reset their future and got a pick to do it. Job well done. If anything, you can argue Seattle has a chance to be better next depending on what they do at QB.
