Well, it looks like star EDGE rusher Myles Garrett won’t be ditching the Cleveland Browns after all.
The two sides agreed to a four-year record-breaking extension that will include $123.5 million in guaranteed money worth $40 million per year, the team announced Sunday. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, this extension makes Garrett the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history.
Schefter also noted that the deal includes a no-trade clause. Owner Jimmy Haslam did not meet with Garrett after the 29-year-old recently requested the meeting–instead letting general manager Andrew Berry negotiate with Klutch Sports, Garrett’s agency.
The former No. 1 overall pick is one of the pass rushers in the NFL. He’s finished with at least 14 sacks in each of the last four seasons with offensive lines consistently delegating most of their attention to him. He won the league’s defensive player of the year in 2023 and has finished in the top-5 for the award on two other occasions.
For his career, the four-time first-team All-Pro’s recorded 102.5 sacks, 352 tackles, 116 tackles-for-loss, 20 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. He’s more than justified his top-overall selection and will now look to end his career in Cleveland, Ohio.
It’s a lot of money to delegate to a non-quarterback, but Garrett is incredibly valuable to their defense. Cleveland still has way too many holes to plug–especially behind center–before they can contend. But at least they were able to come to terms if they were apprehensive about trading him.
