The Philadelphia Eagles are tight up against the salary cap and are looking to free up some money. The Team released a statement regarding the news that Leodis McKelvin has been cut from the team.

McKelvin followed his former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to Philly last offseason inking a 2 year deal worth $6.2 million last year. The Eagles did not want to pay an upcoming roster bonus worth $1.2 million so they decided to release him instead. The transaction clears $3.2MM in cap room and only leaves $250K in dead money.

McKelvin was underwhelming in Philadelphia grading out as the 71st best corner according to Pro Football Focus. During 13 games last year as an Eagle, he recorded two interceptions including one that was returned for a touchdown. He also broke up 16 passes in 12 starts this year.

The Eagles have only $7 million in cap space heading into 2017. This probably won’t be the last move the Eagles make.
