The Jaguars are planning to release wide receiver Christian Kirk, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report Wednesday.
Neither the team nor Kirk have confirmed the news at the time of this publishing.
Kirk, 28, was slated to have the team’s highest cap hit next year at $24.1 million, the exact same as it was in 2024, according to Spotrac. Though his base salary was expected to increase by $1 million, up to $15.5 million, with $1 million in possible incentives based on receptions and receiving yards.
As a result of cutting Kirk, the Jaguars will save roughly $10 million in cap space; his dead cap charge will be approximately $13.5 million.
Kirk was limited to only eight games last season after suffering a season-ending broken collarbone in late October. He finished with 27 catches for 379 yards and just one score–all career lows. In three seasons with Trevor Lawrence, Kirk hauled in 168 passes for 2,274 yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke out in 2022, recording career highs in catches (84), touchdowns (8) and yards (1,108), the only time in his seven-year career he’s eclipsed 1,000 yards.
Kirk, a second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL Draft, is not the only receiver to have been cut over the last 24 hours, joining aging wideouts Davante Adams and Tyler Lockett.
With the NFL’s 2025 salary cap being higher than expected, the Jaguars should have enough cap space to grab another pass catcher to put alongside second-year wideout Brian Thomas and Evan Engram. Jacksonville is coming off one of its worst seasons over the last decade, going 4-13.
