Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who hasn’t played since Feb. 2 due to a calf strain, will not play in the All-Star Game with Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young as his replacement, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Monday.
There is no set timetable for Antetokounmpo’s return, though NBA insider Chris Haynes indicated Sunday that the injury could last for the next two-to-three weeks.
Antetokounmpo, 30, was slated to be an All-Star starter in the frontcourt–his ninth year earning the All-Star nod. He was drafted to Charles Barkley‘s team last week, led by MVP frontrunners Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander plus French superstar Victor Wembanyama.
The two-time MVP is averaging 31.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game on 60.8 percent shooting, even though his 3-point shooting and free-throw numbers have significantly dropped this season.
Young, the league leader in assists, earned the most votes among the reserves that did not originally make the nod, which is what Adam Silver’s selection process is. The All-Star reserves are voted on by the head coaches.
This year marks his fourth career All-Star nod, averaging 23.5 points and 11.4 assists on 40.9 percent shooting, 34.0 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. There was a legitimate argument that Young should’ve made the All-Star deserves, but the backcourt in the East was stacked–making Young a difficult cut.
Good for Young, and now he joins Donovan Mitchell and Gilgeous-Alexander as the only three guards on Team Chuck.
