Pete Carroll is the new head coach in Las Vegas and he just made a splash hire to fill out his staff. After winning a National Championship calling the plays at Ohio State, Chip Kelly is making his return to the NFL. The former Oregon, UCLA, 49ers, and Eagles head coach will become the new offensive coordinator for the Raiders.
The ESPN crew of Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel were the first to report the news:
Kelly, 61, last coached in the NFL in 2016. He spent the past seven seasons in college football. Patrick Graham is also returning to the Raiders so the staff in Vegas is basically set. The biggest question for the Raiders now is going to be who they get to play quarterback. They will likely try to draft Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders but that will be easier said than done considering that they’re picking 6th.
Pete Carroll deserves a ton of credit for this hire. It’s a really smart add by the Raiders. The reality is the Raiders needed credibility and these two hires at least gives them that over the cheerleader of Antonio Pierce.
By the way, the Ohio State coaching staff has been raided since winning the Natty over Notre Dame. Kelly isn’t the only one leaving. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles took the job at Penn State. Offensive line coach Justin Frye left for the Arizona Cardinals. Ryan Day has his work cut out to try to replace those guys.
