Want to talk about news out of left field? The Brooklyn Nets have found their next head coach. The former MVP point guard, Steve Nash, will become the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Nash’s name never surfaced in any rumors, and felt content in retirement. Now he gets to coach Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

Marc Stein of the New York Times was the first to report the news:

Shortly after the news of Nash’s hiring broke, Adrian Wojnarowski reported interim head coach Jacque Vaughn would stay with the team as a highly compensated assistant. Vaughn replaced Kenny Atkinson after his termination in early March, and recently interviewed for the head coach position. But general manger Sean Marks reportedly started recruiting Nash back in March, and eventually pursauded his man.

Steve Nash released his own statement via Chris Haynes regarding the move:

As details start to flutter in, it seems like Kevin Durant was also behind this move. KD grew fond of Nash during offseason workouts in 2017. Nash was a team consultant for the Warriors during that season. Aside from KD’s history with Nash, Marks spent two years playing alongside Nash in Phoenix, from 2006-08.

Nash is an exciting hire. We can’t say for sure what Nash will bring to the table from an X’s and O’s standpoint. He had a ton of success as a player with Mike D’Antoni in Phoenix, winning multiple MVP awards there. Could Nash run something similar to what we see with the Rockets? Time will tell.

Nash wouldn’t come out of retirement without a chance to win right away. Having Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on your side is an excellent place to start. The offseason for Brooklyn will now focus on trying to add a third star to the mix.
