BREAKING: Kelsey Plum to Sparks, Jewell Lloyd Traded To Aces In Multi-Team Deal

A WNBA blockbuster trade happened in JANUARY. We love the chaos. The Seattle Storm traded Jewell Lloyd to the Las Vegas Aces, and Kelsey Plum to the Los Angeles Sparks. There seems to be picks involved in the trade as well. This was first reported by Shams Charania on Twitter/X:

This was the first report. However, it doesn’t show you what the Seattle Storm got in return after sending away Jewell Lloyd and not getting Kelsey Plum back, this is where the Los Angeles Sparks come in. Shams Charania reported this soon after that initial report on Twitter/X:

The Storm are acquiring the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft and Li Yueru from the Sparks in this three-team trade, with the Sparks getting No. 9 from Seattle and the Aces receiving No. 13 from LA, sources tell me, @ramonashelburne, @alexaphilippou and @kendra__andrews. https://t.co/Di1CWmMyTF

The draft picks are key here. In a draft that features Paige Bueckers, Kiki Iriafen, Azzi Fudd, Olivia Miles, Sedona Prince, and Dominique Malonga. The Storm traded away Jewell Lloyd to get some young fresh talent at the #2 overall pick. Despite getting the 2nd overall pick, I think the Storm actually lost out on this trade and the Sparks were the real winners. Rickea Jackson, Cameron Brink, Kelsey Plum, and now a chance for the 9th overall pick to be a contributor to the team will work out nicely for them.

The Aces do lose Kelsey Plum but gain Jewell Lloyd, which is slightly better is some eyes. They get the 13th overall pick but it’s not clear if that player will make the roster at this time. With limited teams in the WNBA, new draft picks have to work to get on a team. With WNBA Free Agency days away (February 1st, 2025), we will see how these teams adjust their free agency strategy now with this trade in the books.
