Mike Tirico to be NBC’s lead play-by-play voice for NBA

Mike Tirico is back in the NBA circles!

The longtime play-by-play broadcaster will be the league’s lead voice when the NBA returns to NBC next season, the company announced Wednesday. He previously called NBA games for ESPN from 2002-16.

“I could not be more thrilled about returning courtside to call NBA games,” Tirico said via release. “My 15 years of chronicling the best basketball players in the world still stands as one of the highlights of my career. Like so many others, my love of the league took hold during the unforgettable days of the NBA on NBC back in the ’90s. The chance to be a part of the team bringing that iconic partnership back to life has us incredibly excited.”

The NBA officially announced its return to NBC after two decades last summer. The network is expected to broadcast 100 regular season games on Tuesday and Sunday nights as well as be the new host for All-Star Weekend, among other benefits.

Tirico has been a mainstay for sports coverage on all NBC Universal platforms when it comes to the NFL, Olympics and College Football. He also has been the lead voice for the U.S. Open, Open Championship, Stanley Cup Plays, Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis 500, among other events.

According to the press release, he is “expected to work one or more games per week once NBC Sports’ coverage of the NFL and Milan Cortina Olympic Winter Games conclude in February 2026,” while calling select games prior to that time.

“We are excited that Big Event Mike Tirico will be returning to his courtside seat as the NBA returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock,” Sam Flood, NBC Sports’ Executive Producer, said via release. “From the Olympics to Sunday Night Football to major golf championships and now the NBA, Mike is the most versatile voice in sports.”

This was to be expected–and a well-deserved honor or Tirico. NBC has already hired 20-year veteran Jamal Crawford as a game analyst, so I’m curious to see how they expand after Amazon has made a few deals themselves.
