Alabama DT Damon Payne Transfers To Michigan

Damon Payne entered the transfer portal and has now picked his next destination.

247 Sports reporter Matt Zenitz was the first to report the news here:

Payne, a  Belleville, Michigan native, was a five star prospect during the 2021 cycle. The 6-foot-4, 315, defensive tackle notched 14 tackles for the Tide this past season.

This loss by Alabama might not be the most notable departure in the program. Former top ranked QB Dylan Lonergan is also leaving for Boston College. It’s not like the old days where Bama could just stock pile depth. If those guys don’t play now, they leave for other places they can step in and play.

Oh, and here is a quick side note. Apparently, Damon Payne and Daron Payne are not related. Both played at Alabama. Maybe some assume Damon is the little brother to the Commanders’ defensive tackle. That is not the case. Just a weird coincidence.

On the Michigan side, this was a big area of need. Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham are more than likely off to the NFL. Replacing those two guys will not be easy. Payne will likely be plugged in as the starter right away for the Sherrone Moore-led Wolverines. Payne has just one year of eligibility remaining so this is really his last shot to prove he’s an NFL caliber player. Thus far, he hasn’t been super impactful with the Tide at Alabama but certainly has the talent to figure it out.
