Avalanche Already Eyeing Extension For MacKenzie Blackwood?

The Avalanche landed MacKenzie Blackwood via trade with the Sharks. After a nightmare season of goaltending, it’s not hard to understand why Colorado wanted to shake things up in net. However, it would appear they’re really confident in their new goalie.

The former second round pick in 2015 by New Jersey is an impending free agent after this season. The Avs are already trying to get an extension done with their new goalie.

Avs General Manager Chris MacFarland told Max Miller of The Hockey News the following:

“We want the player to get settled in here. Focus on the hockey, and then, when the time is right, we’ll certainly see if there’s something that can make sense,” MacFarland said. “I’d be lying if I said we’re acquiring him for four months of hockey.”

“You got to give to get. The goalie market is [tight]. It’s not easy in season to get starting goaltenders in this league, and we wanted to get ahead of it and that was the cost of doing business,” MacFarland explained. “Mike [Grier] was in a strong position. They’re at a point where they’re playing really competitive hockey, and there’s a lot of excitement going on with the Sharks. He saw an opportunity to add a young player at the right age for his mix.”

So far so good for Blackwood. In his first outing with the Avs, he picked up the win and stopped 37 of the 39 shots faced. It feels like they haven’t gotten a performance like that all year.

For anybody who cares, McFarland lied his face off and claims he’s still a Georgiev believer…

“I’m a Georgie believer. I think he’s a good goaltender,” MacFarland said. “We felt we needed an upgrade a few weeks ago and started kicking tires.”
