If you just thought the Nolan Arenado trade rumors were just smoke, think again. John Mozeliak isn’t even trying to hide it. If the Cards have it their way, Arenado is playing for someone else in 2025.
“It’s my intention to try” to move Arenado this season, said Mozeliak when asked by reporters at the Winter Meetings.
Arenado, 33, has a full no-trade clause. The defensive wizard at the hot corner basically controls his destiny here. He’s also owed a ton of deferred money on the back end of that contract. Arenado is owed $74 million over the three remaining years of his contract. The good news is $10 of that figure is covered by the Rockies as terms of the original trade that brought him to St. Louis.
Therein lies the crux of the situation. The most likely scenario here is that the Cardinals will have to find a bad contract in return to balance the money. With Chaim Bloom set to run the Cardinals in the near future, could that team be the Red Sox? The future for Masataka Yoshida seems a bit cloudy in Boston. Bloom was the one responsible for signing him in Boston. On paper, some sort of transaction involving those two does make some sense. Beyond that, it’s hard to find a trade partner.
A lot of things seem to be on the table regarding this possible move. Would Arenado move off a full time third base role to help facilitate a move? Would he only accept a trade to a legitimate World Series contender? A lot of questions here that need to be answered. The only thing that’s clear is that when this trade goes down, the Cardinals will probably be on the short end of it. That’s why Mozeliak will be out of a job after next season.
