For the second time in three years, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has won the AL MVP award, MLB announced Thursday. Judge won the award over Kansas City Royals rising star Bobby Witt Jr. and teammate Juan Soto, who’s the hottest free agent this offseason.
Judge took home the award after the 2022 season, but earned 28 of the 30 first-place votes. Even though he set the AL record for the most home runs that season, he arguably had a better overall campaign in 2024.
Even after a sluggish start to the season due to not having much of a spring training, Judge clobbered an MLB-most 58 home runs with MLB-mosts in both RBIs (144), walks (133) and intentional walks (20). He also topped the entire sport in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and total bases.
Sure, many people are going to remember him for the dropped flyout in Game 5 of the World Series, or for another below-average postseason run. That’s more than fair. But what’s also fair is that he put together one of the best offensive seasons this century. Only four players ever–Ted Williams, Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth–had a higher OPS+ than Judge did in 2024. That’s impressive, barring none.
Aaron Judge becomes the seventh Yankees player to win multiple MVPs, joining Alex Rodriguez, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. His unanimous vote also made him the second Yankee to ever be a unanimous MVP–with the other being Mantle in 1956.
