The NBA Cup Courts Suck Ass

Look, I don’t want to totally kill Adam Silver here. I get what the guy is trying to do. The midseason tournament approach works for European soccer so why can’t it work over here? Frankly, I think American sports should steal more ideas for overseas soccer leagues. I’d argue if College Football set up a relegation and Champions League format for the sport they would be in a significantly better spot. Putting all that aside, one thing that can’t be denied is that the NBA Cup courts suck ass.

The idea is okay but the execution has been poor. I think we can agree on that. To finish off this post, I’m just going to do a thought dump below. Feel free to comment on anything you agree/disagree on.

2024-25 Emirates NBA Cup: Group Stage Best Bets

A: Some of the courts are much better than others. Some of the courts are so bad that the games aren’t even watchable. For the cover image, I used the Celtics one, which is tolerable. It just would have been way cooler if they mixed in a shamrock or had some of cool design with the leprechaun. The court they have going on is a bunch of random colored boxes.

B: The trophy is lame. It looks like trash. They really couldn’t have come up with a better trophy? It’s bad enough the trophy is lame. It’s worse that it’s in the center of the floor and totally obnoxious.

C: There isn’t enough juice behind this tournament. Everything counts towards the regular season and no franchise that is taken seriously is never going to hang a banner for winning this nonsense tournament. If they’re going to change the floor for what is essentially a regular season game, you need to mix up the rules.

Insert a powerplay, create a four point line, etc. If you’re going to mix up the floor, at least make it unique to where the rules are also different from the normal floor.
