Daniel Jones moved to Third-String as Tommy DeVito will start for Giants

Wow! They finally did it. Per a post from the team X account, the New York Giants has officially moved on from quarterback Daniel Jones, moving him to third string. They plan to start Tommy DeVito in his place, with Drew Lock in the backup role.

It looks like the G-Men are taking the first steps in the process of moving on from Jones, which desperately needs to happen. The Giants likely would have moved on from Jones if not for the $160 million deal they signed him to less than two years ago. The team is currently 2-8, and Jones has just one playoff win in his six career seasons. I think we can all agree that Daniel Jones has been considered one of the worst QBs in the league for a while now.

DeVito Created a Spark Last Season

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked about Jones getting benched and DeVito getting the start by reporters this morning. Per ESPN, he responded, “I got a lot of respect for Daniel, I’ve said that before…Those conversations will remain private. Certainly you’re not going to be happy about [being benched] as a competitor, and I respect that. After evaluating a bunch of things and looking at a lot of tape and being around Tommy last year where he created a little bit of a spark for us, that’s the reason why we’re going with Tommy.”

Tommy DeVito showed flashes last year as he led the Giants on a three-game win streak, beating the Commanders, Patriots, and Packers, respectively. However, it is quite clear that DeVito is the bridge quarterback between Jones and whoever the team selects in the upcoming draft.

It is safe to say that the Giants reached taking Daniel Jones sixth overall in 2019. He surely wasn’t the successor to Eli Manning that the team was hoping he would be. Daniel Jones will be remembered as a bust, plain and simple. I think he will carve out a nice career as a backup from here. I don’t think any team would willingly start him at this point.
