Steve Kerr wants Warriors to maintain ‘high volume’ 3-point shooting without Klay Thompson

The Golden State Warriors may have lost one of the best shooters of all-time this offseason in Klay Thompson, but that doesn’t mean that head coach Steve Kerr wants the team to stop taking long-ball.

During his media availability Tuesday night, Golden State’s first day of training camp, Kerr was adamant about wanting the team to remain a high-volume 3-point shooting team.

“I want [Andrew Wiggins] shooting six, seven threes a game; I want [Brandin Podziemski], I want [Moses Moody], I want [De’Anthony Melton] (letting it fly). I want to be a high-volume 3-point shooting team,” Kerr said. “I think that’s important for us.

“And the big shift is Klay’s not here. We were fourth in the league in 3-point attempts last year–Klay probably shot 8-10 of them himself every game. We’re going to have to fill that void, and that’s going to come from multiple people.”

To Kerr’s point, Golden State was fourth in the NBA in 3-point attempts per 100 possessions last year–trailing only Boston, Dallas and Sacramento. Behind Stephen Curry and Thompson, the Warriors have placed in the top-4 in 3s attempted on a per-possession basis in each of the last four years.

They replaced Thompson with Melton, a 38 percent 3-point threat on steady volume the last four seasons, and Hield, one of the best shooters in the NBA. The latter is a better movement shooter, but I expect both to help supplement the production lost by Thompson amicably.

Who knows whether or not their system looks stylistically different, slightly. Though I’d expect the same split cuts, stagger screens and consistent movement to continue to help the Warriors’ non-spacers in Draymond Green, Trayce Jackson-Davis and newly-signed Kyle Anderson.
