The Miami Marlins officially announced Sunday, the final day of the 2024 MLB regular season, that Skip Schumaker will not be returning for a third season as manager in 2025.
“After several constructive conversations with Skip, [president of baseball operations] Peter [Bendix] and ownership, we have mutually agreed to part ways, and Skip will not be returning to manage the club next year,” Bruce Sherman, the team’s chairman and principal owner, said in a statement. “The Marlins will immediately begin the process of searching for the next leader to serve as our new field manager.”
Schumaker on NL Manager of the Year in his first year at the helm in 2023 after going 84-78, clinching their second postseason bid since winning the World Series in 2003. Though they promptly got eliminated in two games by the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Marlins underwent changes in the front office last season after general manager Kim Ng stepped down in mid-October due to her and ownership reportedly not seeing eye-to-eye on reshaping the Baseball Operations department. The organization brought in former Tampa Bay Rays executive Peter Bendix to be the team’s new president of baseball operations, and it was leaked early in the season that Schumaker may not return after the season.
In two seasons with Miami, Schumaker went 146-178, finishing No. 3 and 5 in the NL East, respectively. Before his stint with the Marlins, he was a first-base coach with the San Diego Padres for three seasons (2018-21) before being a bench coach with St. Louis in 2022.
