Toronto Raptors wing Bruce Brown underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and won’t be re-evaluated for three weeks, Bleacher Report NBA insider Chris Haynes was the first to report Friday.
The Raptors’ training camp begins Oct. 1 in Montreal, meaning Brown will miss that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he misses the start of the regular season, which begins in just over a month; a re-evaluation in three weeks likely means he will miss at least 4-6 weeks, barring a setback or, conversely, a very speedy recovery, which is more unlikely with knee surgery.
Toronto acquired Brown in the package for Pascal Siakam ahead of last season’s trade deadline. For the season, the 6-foot-4 Swiss army knife averaged 10.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists on 47.8 percent shooting and 55.7 percent true shooting. He appeared in 34 games with the Raptors, posting 9.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 26.0 minutes per game.
The Raptors aren’t in any place to contend, so it shouldn’t rush Brown back under any circumstance. He’s one of their best players, but he also could be one of their most valuable trade assets ahead of this year’s deadline.
Brown’s $23 million cap hit is expiring at the end of the season. It’s not a cheap price tag, and it will be interesting to see how certain contenders navigate this year’s deadline with the first year of the ultra-punitive penalties for the second apron. Though I still believe, when healthy, he’s an incredibly value glue guy that all 30 teams should aim to have.
