James Paxton is currently on the IL and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB Season. It turns out that we’ve already seen the last of the left-handed starter. On a recent podcast, Paxton revealed that his plan is to call it quits and retire.
“I’m hoping that we can squeak into the postseason and I get an opportunity to pitch again. But I think, after this season, I’m going to be retiring and moving on to the next chapter,”
Paxton, 35, made 21 starts this year posting a 9-3 mark with a 4.40 ERA in split duties with the Dodgers and Red Sox. Paxton returned to Boston in a minor trade but quickly went back on the shelf after only three starts. Yes, the Red Sox were somehow counting on him again this year, which backfired but nobody with a brain is surprised about that part.
Of course, injuries were always a part of Paxton’s narrative. At some point, they take a toll. That goes without saying… From 2020 to 2022, Paxton pitched a grand total of 21.2 innings pitched. During that stretch, we all knew it was probably the beginning of the end.
Hey, still a great career for a guy who pulled in over $50 million and got to pitch for the Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers. Cheers to a hell of a career for the Big Maple.
The positive of all of this is when the Red Sox cheap out, they don’t have Paxton to fall back on as their plan D.
