Netflix to launch new NBA docuseries ‘Starting 5’ on Oct. 9

Netflix is tipping off a new NBA docuseries this coming fall called “Starting 5,” which will peel back the curtain on the 2023-24 NBA season for five players leaguewide.

The production, produced by LeBron James‘ Uninterrupted studio, will feature James, in addition to reigning champion Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards and Domantas Sabonis.

The docuseries will be directed by Susan Ansman, Trishtan Williams and Peter J. Scalettar; it will be executively produced by Maverick Carter–one of the faces of Klutch–Jamal Henderson, Philip Bryan and Randy Mims.

According to Netflix’s description, the show will have 10 45-minute episodes, premiering on Oct. 9. Here’s the official 48-second teaser it released on Twitter Wednesday:

Magic Johnson responds to Anthony Edwards over ‘skill’ comments

This isn’t the first time that Netflix has worked with James’ “Uninterrupted” crew in some capacity; Netflix exclusively launched Hustle–a 2022 basketball film starring Adam Sandler, which has a 93 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes–plus The Playbook, Rez Ball and Noami Osaka.

It will be awesome to see behind-the-scenes, never-seen footage of a few of the game’s brightest stars and their quest for an NBA Title. Tatum was the only one to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy, but it will be fascinating to see how Butler, Sabonis, James and Edwards approached their seasons from an individual and team perspective.

How do they handle all the day-to-day distractions? What is each of their individual routines? How did they all handle adversity throughout the season? Is there any drama behind the scenes? Those are just a few of the very many things I’m interested in seeing for each player.
