Kraken Reach Seven-Year Extension With Matty Beniers

Matty Beniers was an RFA that Seattle needed to get squared away. Today the two sides finally came together on a contract extension after his entry level deal expired. Beniers and the Kraken have reached a seven-year contract extension that will carry an AAV of $7.14 million.

The Kraken released this statement on their website:

“As the Kraken roll into a fourth season squarely aiming to become perennial contenders for the Stanley Cup, the franchise’s best-known and most decorated prospect-turned-bonafide-pro Matty Beniers cemented his role in that pursuit Tuesday by agreeing to terms on a seven-year contract for just under $50 million over seven seasons ($7.14 million average annual value).”

“Matty has been a core part of our team since making his NHL debut, not only on the ice but in his commitment to our community and our fans,” said Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis. “Signing Matty to a new contract was a top priority for our offseason, and we are excited to have it done. We’re looking forward to seeing Matty take the next steps as a player and watching him contribute to many more memorable moments for our franchise.”

Beniers, 22 in November, was selected by Seattle with the second overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft out of Michigan. Owen Power went first that year reigning from the same school. Right now, Beniers is a really strong defensive center but needs to grow offensively to make this deal worthwhile. Beniers only had 15 goals and 37 total points a season ago. Beniers taking a step forward offensively will be the key to this deal. The positive is that he’s already strong in his own end and is still very young.
