The Minnesota Vikings have signed veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a one-year, $10 million deal with $7 million guaranteed, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report Sunday.
Gilmore joins a cornerback room in desperate need of help. He’s expected to start alongside veteran Byron Murphy Jr., the team’s top corner heading into the 2024 season.
Minnesota lacks depth at corner, with Shaquill Griffin, Akayleb Evans, Fabian Moreau and Duke Shelley as presumably the other top options. Fourth-round rookie Khyree Jackson tragically passed away due to a car accident in early July; second-year corner Mekhi Blackmon also suffered a season-ending ACL injury in late July.
Gilmore is past the prime of his career, but re-unites with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who was on the Patriots’ coaching staff for two of Gilmore’s four seasons in New England. The 33-year-old most recently suited up for the Dallas Cowboys, posting 68 tackles with 13 pass deflections and two interceptions across 17 games.
He will be entering his 13th NFL season with his sixth different organization. Along with New England and Dallas, he’s played for the Buffalo Bills–where he was drafted No. 10 overall in 2012–Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts.
We’ll see how Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro honoree, is able to hold up on the outside. In the end, a body is a body and a one-year flier isn’t the worst idea with the regular season being three weeks away.
