The Chicago White Sox Fire Manager Pedro Grifol

Reports from around the league this afternoon confirm that the Chicago White Sox have fired manager Pedro Grifol. Grifol, 54, was only partway through his second season as the team’s manager. Within those two seasons, Grifol and the White Sox achieved an 89-190 record with no playoff appearances. Pedro Grifol will leave the White Sox as their statistically worst manager of all time, an impressive as the history of White Sox managers is not an illustrious one.

In his place, the Chicago White Sox have appointed Grady Sizemore as the interim manager. In 10 seasons as a player for various teams, Sizemore was a 3x All-Star and 2x Gold Glove recipient. Since retiring from playing, he has spent multiple seasons as a coach in the minor leagues before joining the White Sox this year. He is not expected to be the permanent manager. Chris Getz, general manager of the White Sox, says they will “focus on candidates outside the White Sox organization” for a long term fit.

The Chicago White Sox are historically awful this year. They currently sits at 28-89, well within distance of the worst single season record in over 100 years. While it generally makes sense to fire the manager of a team doing so poorly, the woes of the Chicago White Sox are much larger than managerial choices. They have the second worst team ERA in the league, and have given up the second most home runs. They have hit the second least home runs in the league at 98, barely better than the Washington Nationals’ 95. It’s going to take more than a manager to turn this team around.
